Postmodern Art - Final

Art became "modern" in the era called the Modern period. This was the introduction to originality, and during this time we began to see things we have never seen before in art. After the Modern period, a period called Postmodern emerged. When Postmodern art was discovered, it changed the view of everything. It is another leap of originality. Postmodern art is all of art over time being put together in work, making it even more original then the Modern art period. It is all different aspects of art we have seen before, put into pieces in more modern way. The unique pieces in the Postmodern time definitely changed art in history and made "original' period look bland.

When looking at Postmodern artwork, it is common to see that there is a message the artist is trying to send to the viewer. It may be optimistic or pessimistic, depending on the message the artist is trying to display. The pieces may either be simple, complicated, or even both. Pop Art is also very common in the modern periods of art, along with Conceptual art, which sends an opinionated view of society and issues through art. Abstract is also another commonly used type of art in the Postmodern period.

My example of Postmodernism through artwork was done on four canvases. The reason why I chose to do one piece on four canvases is because it is common to see a piece done on multiple faces, as if it were split, in Postmodern rooms. It is simply different from your "normal" piece of art. I used silver spraypaint as the base color, and used letters as stencils to spell out the word "FREE" across the canvases. For the abstract effect, there is different colors of splattered paint across the canvases. I chose this word because it is a contrast to the birds, which are going around the letters. The birds are newspaper cut-outs of headlines, and titles, and even articles. The purpose of the newspaper cut-outs is to send the pessimistic messages of the problems our world has today. I believe that overall, my project shows both a pessimistic and optimistic message. Being "FREE" is the overall message, and the doves flying with the negative issues shows this.
